For DCT service and maintenance we have adopted a 40/80 replacement interval - 40,000 mile fluid changes and 80,000 mile major service. You can certainly do the filters and oil pan ahead of time and we won't discourage you. But it feels like the 40/80 interval balances an engaged preventative maintenance plan without unnecessary expense. This kit is all Genuine or OEM components to give your DCT a major service with the oil pan off.
The main DCT filter is designed to be serviced and replaced and can usually be done without a lot of hassle. And it's not uncommon to find a leak around the DCT oil pan**. BMW does not sell the pan gasket separately so buying a new pan is a requirement, which is not a bad thing when you consider it's made of plastic and is in a high temp/high stress environment. We can also build this package with a Viton oil pan gasket that is better resistant to heat and chemicals (contact us for a custom kit).
Five liters of OEM Pentosin DCT fluid are included. You will receive 5 single liters of fluid or one 5-liter jug, depending on stock status. The correct fluid level can only be achieved by following the factory top-off and fill procedure which is done before the transmission reaches 40°C (104°F). Most diagnostic apps and handheld tools should have the feature to read transmission temp. Otherwise, a factory-level scan tool will be required.
BMW calls for replacing the sucking jet pump inside the oil pan and above the suction filter. We suspect this is because the pan and filter are off and this is a “while you're in there” suggestion. We've never replaced it in any of the DCT service performed in our shop but these cars are getting up there in mileage so now may be the time to do it. If you replace the fluid pump every 80,000 miles you should stay ahead of any failures.
*the factory fill plug has a recessed o-ring seal that is not replaceable on its own. The fill plug is quite expensive and wasteful to replace for every service so we came up with a less-expensive alternative. The plug included with this kit has a metric (M18) crush washer that is much cheaper to replace than the whole plug. And we included a couple of replacement crush washers for future service.
**leaks around the DCT oil pan may not be from the pan itself. Here are a few places to check for a DCT oil leak:
- check that the drain plug is more than finger-tight (correct spec is 8Nm, 6ft-lbs)
- check for leaks at the oil cooler line connections (o-rings)
- check the passenger side of the transmission for leaks around the Mechatronics unit cover
- check for a vertical stain or leak down the passenger side of the transmission, which would be coming from the Mechatronics connector on top of the transmission
- check for leak or dampness where the transmission bellhousing meets the engine block (telltale sign of a leaking rear main seal)
