Redline D4 ATF is a popular choice for owners of BMWs with automatic transmissions as well as manual transmissions from 1993 onward. D4 ATF also provides a GL-4 level of gear protection, giving it balanced frictional characteristics that provide smooth and consistent shifts for extended drain intervals. The superior stability compared to petroleum ATFs allows high-temperature operation without varnishing valves and clutches which leads to transmission failure. D4 ATF also provides improved shifting in cold weather.
- Versatile ATF provides a GL-4 level of gear protection
- Appropriate coefficient of friction for most manual transmission synchronizers
- Excellent for high- and low-mile transmissions
- Excellent cold weather operation
On manual transmissions, check the label on the side for the recommended fluid. The ATFD4 works best in transmissions with an ATF label. We recommend Red Line MT-LV for cars that have an MTF label. MT-LV can also be used in high temp/race track environments where ATF D4 might thin too much and make shifting notchy.
BMW manual transmission: most take 1.3-1.9 liters (1.4-2.0 quarts). We recommend changing your manual transmission oil every 30,000-40,000 miles.
BMW automatic transmission: check with your mechanic for fill quantity and procedure.
ATF D4 can also be used in some power steering systems. It's a direct fill for systems that use ATF. For later systems that use CHF11S the ATF D4 is much thicker and should only be used in a track environment where the fluid will get hot and the viscosity will become thinner. Also be aware that ATF can potentially affect rubber seals used in CHF systems, causing failure of the seal.
