The belt tensioner maintains the correct tightness on the belt even as it ages and becomes longer. It self-adjusts so that engine accessories - water pump, alternator, power steering, A/C compressor - are always working within spec. The tensioner will need to be replaced if it can no longer adjust the belt on its own.

This tensioner is used twice on M60 and M62 V8 engines - for the main drive belt and the A/C compressor. Order 2 if you're replacing both tensioners and belts.
