This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 12147539166 (12-14-7-539-166) and is described as Camshaft Sensor (cam sensor) for E39 540i, E38 740i/740il, E53 X5 4.4i/4.6is for the model years 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2003.

The engine computer takes the camshaft position from this sensor to assist in setting timing and even when starting the engine. A bad cam position sensor will lead to hard starting and reduced power as the engine computer reverts to 'safe mode' maps. There will also be a fault code and check engine light for camshaft reference sensor.

This is an OEM cam position sensor manufactured by an original supplier to BMW for this part. As the OEM it meets all of BMW's original design, fitment, and performance requirements and is TUV approved. OEM parts are the best alternative to more expensive Original BMW parts because they are virtually identical without the inflated price tag. This part has a two year warranty.
