Auto Transmission Radiator Oil Cooler Thermostat, Behr - E60, E63

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 17217559962 (17 21 7 559 962) and is described as the Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Thermostat, which is mounted to the radiator on many non-turbo model E60 5 series, E63/E64 6 Series, and E65/E66 7 series models. 

This thermostat controls the flow of transmission oil through the transmission oil cooler. A faulty oil cooler thermostat can lead to transmission overheating (if it's stuck closed) or a slow-to-warm transmission (if it's stuck open). Either scenario will trigger transmission / engine fault codes and require immediate attention.
